Annonay - Devesset - Les Estables (102 km)
I did this tour in April/May 2025 on an E-MTB. I did the tour in 5 days instead of 7, because there were only 5 sunny, dry days.
The route is currently pretty rough. Plenty of paths consist only of loose, rough rocks, or have up to 2 m (!) deep trenches from rainwater run-off. I guess this was caused by strong erosion from a massive storm in October 2024, which also damaged several bridges. Expect to push your bike in such sections, even with a full-suspension E-MTB!
It also turned out that I was there well before the main season, and plenty of accomodations and restaurants were not yet open, so it was sometimes difficult to find a bed or something to eat. There is also no bike shop anywhere along the route, so bring a well-maintained bike, tools and spare parts.
On the upside, the tour is really beautiful. Almost no sections are on main roads, so it's quiet and peaceful. It's a good mix of wide paths and single trails, and the landscape provides everything from dense wood to dry shrubs to farm fields, and plenty of spots with a nice view.
Favourite sections: - Day 1: Saint-Bonnet-Le-Froid to Devesset. Smooth, fast, wide tracks through forest - Day 2: A hike on Mont Mezenv - Day 4: Le Bez to Loubaresse. Super lovely scenery! - Day 5: First a downhill on a technical singletrail, then another one on a fast, smooth track, down to Saint-Pierre-Saint-Jean
It was a hard, but very rewarding experience. I can recommend it, but I also hope that some of the paths and tracks receive some direly needed maintenance.
