Château de La Brède
Beschreibung
The castle of La Brède, home of the writer and philosopher Charles Louis de Secondat better known under the name of Montesquieu, remained the property of the family until 2004. Built from the 14th century on the ruins of an older castle, the building has undergone several rearrangements and improvements until the 19th century. The castle has retained its appearance of a medieval fortress and is reflected in the water of wide moats. The interior leads the visitor in the writer’s footsteps through the emblematic places where he worked, including his library and his room preserved in its state of the 18th century. Visiting the chapel, dining room and living rooms reveals the richness of the collections and furniture gathered by the family over time. At the heart of a wooded estate, Montesquieu has structured a large regular garden composed of a grove with alleys forming a star-like network.
