Geological and Archaeological Museum
Beschreibung
Steeped in history, this former prison—where graffiti left by inmates can still be seen—is now home to the Urgonia Museum. The exhibitions on display here reveal the unique and fascinating history of this region spanning 130 million years. Marine and continental eras follow one another, unveiling a whole array of fossilized animals now extinct, as well as the traces left by humans since their arrival in this area some 10,000 years ago. Having become an internationally renowned geological site since the mid-19th century, the traces of Urgonian limestone mining are numerous and varied, as you will discover. To complement this theme, the Alpilles Regional Nature Park presents an ornithological exhibition dedicated to thirteen protected bird species that have been the focus of a Life program.
