The Musée Hèbre brings together the Muséeof Art and History and the Heritage Department, which is responsible for implementing the City of Art and History label.

Created in the second half of the 19th century, the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire boasts rich collections ranging from fine art to non-Western ethnology. Orientalist paintings, portraits and realistic landscapes sit alongside cosmopolitan objects brought back from the four corners of the world by explorers from Rochefort and the surrounding area. The expeditions of famous Rocheforters such as the Lesson brothers to Oceania, and the naval officers Silvestre and Hazard to Asia, capture the adventurous spirit that animated Rochefort when its arsenal was thriving.

On the ground floor of the museum, the CIAP, the architecture and heritage interpretation centre, provides the keys to understanding the town and its development, thanks to the spectacular relief plan of Rochefort, produced in 1835. Accompanied by interactive interpretation tools, it is at the heart of a tour recounting the highlights of the town's urban and social history, from 1666 to the present day. It's an invitation to share the secrets of an extraordinary city, born on the banks of the Charente under the reign of the Sun King.
Access to the CIAP is free on the ground floor.
